Department Overview

Established in January 2003, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Military Institute of Science and Technology (MIST) is committed to excellence in engineering education, research, and professional development. Since its inception with an initial cohort of 45 undergraduate students, the department has grown significantly, graduating more than 1,045 engineers and 21 Master's degree recipients as of June 2025. The department offers a structured and comprehensive suite of degree programs designed to meet national and global accreditation standards: Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), Master of Science (M.Sc.), Master of Engineering (M.Engg.) and, Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Mechanical Engineering. Currently, the department supports 436 undergraduate and 60 postgraduate students. All programs emphasize academic rigor, analytical proficiency, ethical responsibility, and lifelong learning, preparing graduates for leadership roles in industry, academia, and research. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is dedicated to educating the next generation of technical leaders through a rigorous integration of theoretical principles and hands-on, industry-aligned design. The curriculum is designed to ensure a solid foundation in the fundamental areas of the discipline. The department maintains a vibrant research ecosystem where faculty and students collaborate on interdisciplinary innovations, consistently publishing in high-impact global venues. Mechanical Engineering department regularly conducts international conferences, seminars, workshops, and short courses to strengthen technical and professional skills. Students actively engage in national and international competitions, promoting innovation and practical learning. To ensure quality assurance and continuous improvement, systematic feedback from students, alumni, faculty, and industry partners is regularly reviewed.

Faculty & Specializations

Led by the Head of Department, the Mechanical Engineering faculty at MIST comprises a diverse team of 1 Distinguished Professor, 9 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 10 Assistant Professors, 16 Lecturers, and 1 Research Assistant. The faculty includes professionals from military, industrial, and academic backgrounds, supported by specialists from reputed institutions, ensuring a balanced integration of theoretical rigor and practical expertise.

Fostering a high-impact research ecosystem, the faculty has published over 150 scholarly works during the past five years while maintaining extensive international collaborations. This research-driven culture directly supports undergraduate research and capstone project supervision, producing graduates equipped with the professional competence and leadership skills required for modern engineering practice.

Laboratories

The Department offers a cutting-edge academic environment designed to foster collaboration, inquiry, and innovation. Modern classrooms are equipped with high-speed internet connectivity and multimedia facilities to support interactive and technology-driven learning.

Along with conventional academic coursework, the Department places strong emphasis on experiential learning. State-of-the-art facilities enable students to effectively bridge theoretical concepts with real-world engineering applications.

To complement theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice, the Department currently operates twelve (12) well-equipped laboratories. These include: Applied Mechanics Lab, Automobile Lab, Computer Aided Design (CAD) Lab, Control Engineering and Robotics Lab, Drawing Shop, Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machinery Lab, Heat Transfer Lab, Machine Tools Lab, Measurement & Quality Control Lab, Metallurgical Lab, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Lab, and Thermodynamics and Applied Thermodynamics Lab.

CATS-MIST (ME)

The Centre for Advisory and Testing Services (CATS) is one of the prime functional units of MIST. The Department of Mechanical Engineering provides advanced instruments, testing facilities, skilled technicians, and experienced faculty members to conduct a wide range of engineering tests. The ME Department is responsible for evaluating the performance and parameters of hydraulic pumps, two-wheel and four-wheel vehicles, material properties, and engine performance. These activities contribute significantly to both the revenue generation and reputation of the Department as well as MIST.

Hydraulic Pump Test Bench: The hydraulic pump test bench at MIST is capable of testing deep submersible pumps used in Bangladesh. Currently, MIST conducts pump testing for organizations such as WASA and several private sector entities.

Vehicle Testing: The ME Department initially started with three-wheeler CNG vehicle testing and has expanded its capabilities to include four-wheel vehicles. Testing services include emission testing, fuel economy testing, brake testing, acceleration testing, engine performance testing, and material testing.

Dynamometer: The recently developed dynamometer facility is capable of testing high-horsepower engines as well as electric motors with precision and reliability.

Material Testing: Using advanced material testing machines, MIST can determine the exact elemental composition of components or products. Additionally, furnace facilities are used to identify and analyze the phases of iron present in materials.

Fatigue Testing: The ME Department conducts fatigue testing of engineering components and has recently evaluated the fatigue characteristics of various motorcycle parts.

Hardness Testing: The Department also offers hardness testing services and has successfully tested hardness properties of different motorcycle components.
